Getting to/around Roanoke:

  • For those wanting to take a car to or from the Roanoke airport, Lyft is typically more popular than Uber.

  • If you’re traveling by Amtrak, Lyft has a partnership with the local Roanoke station, usually offering a discounted rate for rides to the platform. Be sure to double-check your Lyft app to see if the discount is still available.

  • For Amtrak travelers, please note that there are no station attendants at the Roanoke platform. Information on travel times can be found on the Amtrak website or app.

  • Hotel Roanoke provides a free shuttle service to the Roanoke airport. Details about this can be found HERE.

  • You can travel between Roanoke and Blacksburg for $4 each way on the Smart Way bus. Check HERE for more info and a schedule.

International Travel:

  • Make sure you have your passport and any documents you might need for international travel and hotel check-in.

  • Roanoke follows Eastern Daylight Time. Be aware of the potential jet lag.

Technology + Presentations

  • Be sure to bring any technology you might need for your presentation. Each breakout room has a projector, a screen, a wireless connection and, if you requested it, an audio patch for sound. Please be sure to bring your own laptops, chargers, and any adaptors that you anticipate you’ll need for your presentation.

  • For those of you on panels, consider contacting your co-panelists about consolidating your presentations with a shared drive or folder. We will likely have a few adaptors and chargers at the conference but we cannot guarantee that we’ll have the one you need.

  • Detailed Presenter Guidelines will be made available a week before the conference. Some things to keep in mind:

    • We request that participants use Google Slides when developing presentation materials. Google Slides allow for automated speech recognition level live captioning, which we want encourage during each session.

    • If you would like your presentation and/or handout to be included in a digital repository to share with all GBT participants, please email them to


  • Our accessibility coordinator, Martina Svyantek, will be available on site at the Hotel Roanoke (in the Jefferson Board Room, Conference Level) for help navigating the space and the conference. You can reach Martina via email ( or text (530-675-4687).

  • Non-scented products can be found in the swag bags at the conference. We kindly ask both panelists and participants to refrain from wearing, using, or bringing scented products to presentations and collective conference events.

  • Using Google Slides can help make your presentation more accessible. For example, including alt text for images can help make your presentation accessible to screen reader users. More information about this can be found HERE.

  • For the purposes of everyone enjoying your work, if you decide to provide handouts, please make sure they are typed in large (16-18 pt), sans-serif (e.g., Calibri, Arial, or Tahoma) font.

  • Please plan to allow a few extra minutes at registration to pick up an interaction ribbon, which are a way to indicate to others what level of conversation you are open to at any given point during the conference. We encourage you to add one of these ribbons to your name badge and they can be updated at any time!

  • The Hotel Roanoke is located near downtown Roanoke, which hosts different museums and restaurants. Stores carrying clothes and personal hygiene products are located further away, so please come prepared with what you need, or plan to arrange your own travel to take care of any needs that may arise during the conference.

  • The average high temperature for Roanoke in late April is 68 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius), while the average low temperature is 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius). In case of rainy weather, we would suggest also packing an umbrella or rain jacket.


  • Participants will be able to pre-register for three conference workshops: 1) “Feminist Apocalypse Solutions”; 2) “” and; 3) “A T-Shirt Looks at Gender and the GLobal Garment Industry”. Check your inboxes for forms related to registering for these workshops. registrations approximately one week before the conference.
